Cooking school

Last night I read an article ‘Pound for glory’ written by a journalist Sue Bennett in the Sydney Morning Herald. She was peeling topic of Thai cooking school called Amita Thai Cooking School, which emphasizes the arts and traditional cooking techniques are becoming extinct among modern Thai society. Today, the young generation is taking the easy way to visit the stalls and restaurants rather than to cook their own meals at home. She also took the opportunity to learn cooking techniques and share the secrets of success with the owner of Amita, Piyawadi Jantrupon or Tam for short.

Based on the old Thai story, a family man who wants to find a suitable couple for their children assessed in terms of efficiency of the girl makes the kitchen work, especially in handling the mortar to pound chilies, herbs and spices for cooking purposes. They believe that if the mixture is finely minced and creamed means the girl has successfully passed the first obstacle, but if she handles slowly, she would consider to be a lazy girl and do not qualify as a candidate-in-law family. Only a handful of Thai girls today have these skills including Tam. For these reasons, Tam learned how to cook from her grandmother and set up a traditional cooking school on the edge of the Sanam Chai canal in Bangkok. A lot of her students are tourists and locals. Furthermore, she would also like to spend time with her mother and want to do with their daily activities; having given up a career in law had one time endeavor.

Traditional techniques of Thai cuisine stress the use of mortar to pound herbs and spices of cooking and stir frying. This is because they believe the herbs and spices are very good for the health and usefulness in curing many diseases such as dental pain, headaches and also to control the weight balance. Today, most peoples, especially young Thai students studying abroad, are beginning to realize the importance of learning traditional techniques of Thai dishes after their found difficult to get the food unless they know how to cook. With the existence of such a cooking school, the younger generations are able to enjoy their local food even outside the country because they have had to learn cooking skills to cook by themselves. Tourists can also learn the Thai traditional techniques for commercializing in their own countries.

I found that on average these days, there are many Thai restaurants around Sydney which highlighted the Thai cuisine. In conclusion, the demand for the Thai cuisine is rather high and almost all people of different races and cultures have been enjoying well the Thai cuisine. Therefore, no wonder if there is such a cooking school but must be set up again by the young people who ought to be a pioneer, because it was definitely well received especially for those interested in the field of cooking.
